For years I left my tripod at home. Every one I owned was heavy enough that it stayed in the closet instead of the pack. This one didnt.

The AOKA 28 inch mini tripod showed up weighing about 1.1 pounds, and I put it through a full unboxing and first look, which you can watch above. Here is where my head is at after opening the box and running it through both the trail and camp setups.

What’s In the Box

The kit is more complete than I expected for something this small. You get the tripod body with a 360 degree ball head already attached, a two piece center extension column, a phone mount clamp, a stabilizer weight hook, two allen wrenches, and a carry bag. Nothing felt like filler.

The carbon fiber legs feel stiff in hand, not flimsy, and the twist lock mechanism is smooth. It is not as fast as the lever locks on a bigger tripod, but it is not fussy either.

First Feelings: Trail Mode vs Camp Mode

This is the part that actually matters for how I plan to use it. On the trail, legs only, no extension column, it sets up in under a minute and feels genuinely solid holding a phone or an action cam.

Add the extension column for a seated camp or journal entry setup and you get real height, close to 46 inches. It is noticeably less stable up there. A few reviewers mentioned flex in wind at full extension, and I felt the same thing. For a static talking head shot at camp, that is a fair tradeoff. For a long exposure landscape shot in a breeze, I would not trust it.

Rated capacity is 5.5 pounds, so a phone, an action cam, or most mirrorless setups are fine. A full size DSLR with a heavy lens is pushing what this tripod is built for, and that is a fair limit given the weight.

What I cannot tell you yet is how it holds up over months of real trail use. That is the honest answer, and it is exactly what the follow up video will cover once this thing has actually earned some miles in the pack.
